Mohammed Babangida, also affectionately called "IBB" by his countrymen, has long been an integral part of Nigerian life. He served many years in the Nigerian armed forces, rising to the rank of two star General. Following that, he stood as the President of Nigerian from 1985 until 1993, when he handed over governmental control to a Civilian Transition Government. His contributions as the President of Nigeria in a time of tremendous change is remembered as a time when many national improvements were made. Among these, "IBB" is credited as bringing a time of abundance in terms of value in business and a surplus of food for the Nigerian people.
Mohammed Babangida still plays a role in building alliances between Nigeria and other leading governments. He has long been an avid and highly skilled polo player. His talent was such that he was compared to a leading Argentine polo player, and was given the nickname of Maradonna, after that world famous player. Recently, he participated in a polo game held in Dubai. The polo exhibition was arranged by the Al Habtoor brothers, who have a working friendship with "IBB".
In the view of Mohammed Babangida , the alliance with Dubai has the potential to build business and political alliances far beyond concerns for polo matches. Following the matches, closed door meetings held will seal many business agreements beneficial to Nigeria. His goal has been and remains the end of poverty in Nigeria. He has used a catch-phrase to signify this goal:
"Live and Let's Live". At about 70 years of age now, it would seem that his goal is much further along the road to attainment than he would have imagined in his early years of service to Nigeria.
